Childhood obesity is a family problem -- not a child's problem. Parents must be an integral part of the treatment program.
Specific behaviors as they relate to obesity need to be addressed and be included as part of the curriculum (TV viewing, exercise, etc.).
Inclusion of cognitive-behavioral theory and techniques (e.g. How to deal with high- risk eating situations).
Emphasis on increasing the child's exercise levels in a non-stigmatizing, non-competitive, fun environment.
Available support and referral resources to effectively deal with the psychological issues pertaining to eating, family problems and self esteem issues.
Treatment must involve a group setting, rather than individual counseling.
The program should consist of a professional, multi-discipline staff (registered dietitians, mental health specialists, exercise specialist, etc.).
Once the children complete a program, a maintenance program must be available to enhance their education and motivation.
